Photo Contest Winner | Long Island Family Photographer | September Blue Photography
If you were a Facebook fan last year you may remember I hosted a photo contest where fans submitted photos and got their friends and family to vote for them to win a free session with September Blue. Well, the cutie in the tutu stole the show and won the contest!
I was thrilled when C & C won this contest … I had photographed a maternity and newborn session for them already so we were very excited to plan this session for Kira’s First Birthday. We booked Westbury Gardens for the shoot months in advance. A special location was definitely in order. We started planning outfits way in advance and boy do I have to hand it to Kira’s mommy … I thought I was detailed with the links and guidelines and suggestions I send my clients when putting together a session wardrobe. But C – you get 1st prize for sending me Powerpoint slideshows of ideas – I LOVE it. Not even kidding.
I have to admit that it was really, really cool to see Kira again and to get to photograph her at 1 year old. And by really, really cool I of course mean a little sentimental. I mean, I photographed her in her mommy’s belly, and then just a few days old as a newborn and then now, I got to photograph her as 1 year old… standing, laughing, babbling… and very much her own little person.
Her Mommy is stunning…
And Kira is definitely Daddy’s little princess (check out the toe grab – too cute!)
Just a stunning family…
Going through this session and choosing which ones to blog made me realize – it’s time for another contest!!! I had so much fun doing this one last year and it was so nice to see it all come to completion with this session. Sooo, it’s already in the works. All I will say for now is that no photo will need to be submitted this time around – all I want is to hear from YOU! You won’t even have to work hard for this one, it’s going to come naturally. Details coming soon so stay tuned. I’ll be announcing the details in full on the blog (maybe on my birthday? Hint: I am a Virgo.) so keep an eye out here – twitter followers and facebook fans (links up top) will get a heads up! Back to baby Kira…
Like I said, I was so thrilled they won. When I did Kira’s newborn session, I quickly found out how much they both love photography. They showed me all these beautiful images of their lives; memories that were captured by lucky photographers like me, that were treasured by this family – organized into beautiful albums and wall displays. It’s always a pleasure to meet someone as appreciative of photography as you are but to see it the way they treasured their memories made me so happy to be their photographer. I am honored that my images of their lives’ milestones get to be part of those albums and wall displays. And I was more than a little envious of their organization skills in that area, quite honestly.
Congrats again guys!!

Still So Lovely | Long Island Baby Photographer | September Blue Photography
Last year, about this time (give or take a month), I had the pleasure of photographing my friend’s long awaited newborn baby girl. To this day, her session is still one of my best lit newborn sessions… I walked in to the house to find a sunroom just bathed in warm, beautiful natural light. I was in heaven. Before I knew it, we were planning her 1st birthday session… we were all about the location. In the meantime, beautiful baby Annabella was developing a little aversion to grass. Yes, grass. Did not want to touch it, have her bare feet on it, lay on it with a blanket - nothing to do with it. So what? She’s a baby – it’s new, it’s green, it’s itchy, there’s dirt under it - quite frankly, I don’t blame her for not loving grass at first sight. So we found a gorgeous location that gave us lots of beautiful backdrops… sans icky grass. And she was a happy girl.
Check out the daintily pointed toes – how adorable is that?
Did I mention her handsome big brother was there too?
Such a ham…
One for the wall…
A personal favorite… she was so exhausted after a long day of modeling…can you blame her for knocking out like this? =)

Rhyan | Long Island Newborn Photographer | September Blue Photography
I photographed Rhyan’s big brother Aiden late last year for his 1st birthday photos and that’s when I found out he was going to be a big brother this June. Rhyan was a 12 day old beauty…slept like, well, a baby for almost the entire session. And how could she not… the house had to be around 90 degrees without my heater going…. perfect for a newborn session. =) I always try to prepare my newborn session parents well before a session by letting them know the house has to be very, very warm. I bring heaters with me but the house also needs to be warm. I tell them that basically when the heat is just right, everyone will be a bit uncomfortably warm. Everyone except the newborn, that is.
I have to start with this one… this might be my favorite from the session. Though I reserve the right to change that. Dad had just gotten the tattoo…
Rhyan’s Mom and Grandma did a *little* shopping on Etsy
They got so much cute stuff…this was the girliest girlie girl session ever so I had to break it out…yes, the newborn pettiskirt!
Okay maybe this is my favorite… Congrats again K & S – she is beautiful!

And the winner is… | Long Island Newborn Photographer | September Blue Photography
And the winner is: Dean! Well, actually, Dean’s mommy. She won one of a few prizes I donated to the lifamilies.com Bridal Luncheon this year. When I donated a complimentary newborn session – I had no idea it would go to someone already expecting – so I put an expiration date of 2011 on the gift certificate. I was absolutely thrilled to find out it went to someone already expecting and very deserving. J & V, you are a lovely couple and now a beautiful new little family – congratulations again!

Noah | Long Island Newborn Photographer | September Blue Photography
Love his name. Loved his chubbiness even more! And his mom was tiny – you should’ve seen her! They are such an adorable family and I loved hanging out with them while I captured their gorgeous new little boy.
The umbilical cord stump. It’s the newborn tag…. Like when you go to the store and buy something new, you bring it home and it has the tags on it. I see the umbilical cord stump on an 8 day old baby and I think… wow… brand new… and there’s the proof. There it is… a life… new, with tags. =)
A clean, fresh process (my usual) paired with a black backdrop makes for a timeless image:
Look at those cheeks!
I love when newborns just relax into this pose… it’s so natural and candid… reminds me of the way my own babies slept when they were newborns.
So comfy and cozy…
A happy, sleepy newborn is always a goal for me at a newborn session but I love capturing a happy, calm, awake newborn… especially one with eyes like this – priceless!
Brother & Sister | Long Island Baby Photographer | September Blue Photography
So happy to finally share this session with you … meet Mac & Peyton: brother and sister, about a year or so apart. I love seeing siblings this close together in age because you just know how close they are going to be growing up together. Mac was so adorable, grabbing a hold of my hand almost right away, we ran off to play together and had a blast during this session. Mom joked with me about how he would’ve gone home with me. I loved capturing both their blooming little personalities.
Warning to future clients: I am currently obsessed with white – you will probably hear me recommend white something during your pre-session consultation - don’t know how long this will last, but I am just loving it…
I love, love a classic headshot. Crisp eyes with solid eye contact, a great smile – creamy bokeh in the background…. there is something so timeless about it…
And really, there aren’t much cuter things in this world than a baby grabbing toes… irresistible cuteness! But it’s her eyes that really draw me in here…
You can’t help but smile right along with him here…
Again with those eyes!
And finally – some sibling fun!
Dillon | Long Island Newborn Photographer | September Blue Photography
I was so excited to meet baby Dillon. I did his Mommy’s maternity session in January, when we were lucky enough to get a few flurries for her outdoor shots. It was just so fitting that he was a Spring baby with those snowy Maternity shots! Dillion definitely got his parents long, long legs. He still curled up so adorably for me in my green wrap. He ate and slept like a champ for his newborn session and with all that eating – we certainly had a few laughs over all the resulting…er…. incidents. Dad got the brunt of it, but he handled it really well. I always tell my newborn parents – the accidents are inevitable – I expect it and plan for it. All we need to do is have some paper towels and wipes nearby, we handle it and move on. After wiping away the tears of laughter, of course! As you can imagine, I’ve got some pretty hysterical stories and most new parents can definitely appreciate and relate. You won’t have to ask, I usually cheerfully volunteer to recount them!
Anyway – again another shout out to Dillon’s Dad on this shoot – I absolutely loved the suitcases and other props (some of which Dillon was too big for!) that he had ready to go!

Five weeks early | Long Island Newborn Photographer | September Blue Photography
My jaw dropped when I opened the email that said “well, my son came about 5 weeks early…” I’ve gotten my fair share of early newborns but 5 weeks definitely wins the prize for earliest. Baby C was a healthy 6lbs 4 oz at birth and as strong as any full term baby. But he was putty in my hands, so cooperative, and a complete pleasure to photograph. Congratulations R & T on your beautiful baby boy!
My husband and I went on a quick weekend getaway a couple of months ago to New Hope, PA. We stayed at this excellent B&B and I picked up this vintage cranberry crate while exploring the local antique shops… it’s a new favorite for sure and Baby C was so awesome to let me try it for the first time. It’s now my new gallery wrapped canvas sample (photo of that coming soon!)
He was also really good in my twiggy basket…

Sweet Chub | Long Island Newborn Photographer | September Blue Photography
It’s been a whirlwind month – is April really over? Where did it go?! Oh yeah… to the chubby feet and squishy faces of the all the newborns I was lucky enough to photograph this month! With only a minute to blog tonight – here she is… all of 19 days old, my “oldest” newborn yet: Miss Layla. (Love that name!) Look at all that sweet chubbiness… M & C, it was so nice working with you and M – my thoughts are with you! Thank you so much for letting me into your home to photograph your gorgeous newborn baby girl.
Elizabeth | Long Island Newborn Photographer | September Blue Photography
She kept me on the edge of my seat. As far as newborns go, I like to think I get a feel for when they will arrive. I’ve done dozens and dozens of newborn sessions and I think I’ve only had one arrive on exactly on his due date. Elizabeth’s older brother was born several weeks early and so Mom and Dad were fully expecting for his baby sister to make an early arrival as well. It was all a matter of keeping her in there cooking as long as long as possible. Almost every other day I would ask for an update – the suspense was killing me with this little girl! She did come early but safely so and she and Mom, Dad, and big brother were all doing great. Elizabeth gave us an awesome newborn session – but lets start with her big brother and his gorgeous eyes that made me gasp when I pulled them up on my monitor to begin proofing their sneak peeks…
And his little sister – irresistible in mouse ears!
Got my first chance to use my twiggy nest basket – I searched high and low, left and right for this basket and finally scored! I’m in LOVE with it and how it photographs…
Just one more of this cutie…
