Anna turns one | Long Island Baby Photographer | September Blue Photography
The blog is going to go quiet for a few weeks very soon as I’ve actually started packing my bags (yay!) for my trip to Punta Cana for my cousin’s wedding where I’ll be the maid of honor. I’m so excited and I can’t wait! Yes, there will be photos, I’m sure! So anyway, yes there are no sessions on the books for February and I’ll be keeping my fingers tightly crossed that none of my March mommies go really really early. In the meantime, I’m going to try and get caught up on quite a few sessions.
This is Anna’s 1st birthday session. We got so lucky because it was set to be a studio session with a chance for outdoor if the weather held out, and it did! And we got some really BEAUTIFUL outdoor stuff…like really, really canvas worthy! Isn’t she a gorgeous little girl? This was my third time photographing her and I’ve loved watching her grow up over the past few months…
Loved her in my burgundy petti romper…
18 days | Long Island Newborn Photographer | September Blue Photography
It’s true… I won’t deny it. MOST newborn sessions take place within the first 14 days of life and they are better for it. It has pretty much become the industry standard for a newborn session and rarely will you see a newborn session that looks like this when the baby is older. Why? Because when newborns enter their 3rd week of life, baby acne can start to show up… they tend to sleep less and are more alert and awake. Plus, they start to lose that newborn curl and some other classic newborn traits. So I strongly urge all my newborn parents to let me know as SOON as baby is on the way or has been born. Most put me on their call list of friends and family to let me know that baby has arrived. And I can’t tell you how much I have LOVED getting those emails or texts that say “we are on our way to the hospital to have the baby!” I feel like I’m part of it and how exciting is it to be waiting for a new baby to arrive?! Few things in life beat that…
Hmmm … where was I? Oh yes… newborn photography past 14 days of life usually doesn’t normally look like this. But… then every once in awhile there is a dream baby like baby G… and she will do everything that a 6 day old will do and more. (Actually, I’ve been super lucky lately and have gotten several fantastic “older” newborns…maybe it comes with the experience ) When Baby G’s mommy contacted me last minute I just happened to have an opening – I couldn’t say no…
We were SO excited when she gave us all these amazing poses. She was just a happy baby and it showed. Her mommy and daddy were just over the moon in love with her and that showed. It was one of the sweetest newborn sessions ever. And the really great thing about ”older” newborns is how nicely filled out they are…they are eating well and have started to fill out so they are plump and biteable. [It's a word, I just made it up] Here she is… gorgeous baby G!
And the shot that had me LMAO when editing this session… LOVE this!!
Being One | Long Island Baby Photographer | September Blue Photography
Being one means you get to eat what you want, when you want, pretty much. Being one means you get to decide whether you feel like wearing shoes today… or not. Being one means you are just starting to get your footing in this world and you have the bumps and bruises to prove it. Being one means your personality is just starting to really shine through despite the stresses of teething, giving up a nap, and trying oh so hard to start that thing those big people call “talking”. Being one means you are on the verge of learning the power of the tantrum. Being one is so special… parents cherish it, family wants to see it, and everyone celebrates it. This is Sophie, being one.
Timmia & her Spark | Long Island Child Photographer | September Blue Photography
I met Timmia for the first time last year during the holiday mini sessions… she was a little sparkle. Cheerful and so easy to work with. This year her Mommy booked a full Fall session for her family and we were able to capture some really beautiful fall color and I got to see a one year older, one year wiser Timmia. She was a little bit shy at first this time… and honestly – cold! It was a bit a chilly that day and she was wearing her pretty holiday dress for starters. But with a little time and patience, she warmed right up (both physically and emotionally) and I was able to capture that sparkle again. By the end of the session, I was carrying her out of the park on my hip. The wild & spirited ones are easy… give me a shy, reserved child that needs some warming up any day. Getting them to open up to you and reveal that spark is probably THE most rewarding part of this job!

The Last One | Long Island Baby Photographer | September Blue Photography
The last beach session of 2010… I love beach sessions and especially those in late summer and early fall. The quality of light is really something else and these images make for amazing holiday cards. So unexpected, so inviting. Being only a month or two apart, Charlie reminded me so much of my own little Max with his mischievous little sparkle in his eye and his melt-your-heart smile. The only difference was, besides the gorgeous blond hair, the fact that I could actually get a shot (hey - many shots actually) of Charlie in crisp focus because he wasn’t constantly running at me demanding to be held (yes, that is why you don’t see many photos of Max on my site). Charlie’s little sister - 6 month old Ellie - was the cutest, not minding the sand or the wind, and posing happily for her photoshoot.
Stunning Maternity | Long Island Pregnancy Photographer | September Blue Photography
When A. came to me for her maternity session, it was a bit last minute but happily I was able to squeeze her in – maternity sessions are usually much easier for me to squeeze in last minute than any other type of session (a hint about news to come). She also came to me with samples of my maternity work she had picked up online and explained that she wanted pictures like those in part because she “wished she looked like that”. When she walked in – I thought 1. omg – she looks JUST as amazing as Michelle and Conchita (some of the sessions she had shown me samples from) and 2. I am seriously the luckiest maternity photographer ever.
She’s a pretty, tiny little thing with a basketball belly that was so “all baby” that I could easily see her little boy doing somersaults in there during the shoot!
I probably say it everytime I blog a maternity but I really love shooting maternity sessions. So much so that I’ve decided to open up more room in my scheduling to fit more of them in as mini sessions. That’s right – September Blue is now offering maternity minis! This is not a one day only thing. Newborn clients and Baby Plan clients have always had the option of a maternity mini but now I am opening them up to everyone and anyone with special scheduling and special pricing. Maternity minis will be available for scheduling starting in January and will start booking immediately. Details on pricing and packages will be posted on the blog and Facebook within a week or so but feel free to reach out to me if you are interested.
A.’s session was inspiring in many ways - not just artistically, but this session finally lit the fire under my butt to get the minis going – something that I had in the works for awhile. She also inspired some new experimenting with lighting and posing, and even processing. I love to keep it clean, fresh, vibrant and timeless for children but for maternities I am definitely more adventurous and edgy. And I am a firm believer that a single processing style will never be the best fit for every image it meets. For some it works, for some it won’t. The trick is to know when and how to use it. I am not a fan of applying a third party action globally to all images – I rarely, if ever, use any but the ones I’ve written myself and even then, each one is tweaked for the individual image.
See, I told you – stunning!!! =)Congrats again A. and thank you so much for all the inspiration – good luck next week!!
Sophie | Long Island Baby Photographer | September Blue Photography
One year old sessions are always special sessions… they come to me with their decidedly strong personalities in these chubby little bodies, contagious smiles, and this inexplicable power to make you do their bidding. I don’t know how else to explain it but they just run the show with their intense gazes, curious looks, smiles and giggles and their “ooh! A flower!” momentary distractions… A one year old is always two things: unique and unpredictable. Sophie was like this of course, and in her own way, ran the show. I couldn’t stop shooting her.. her final gallery was ginormous… so many expressions, so many wardrobe changes and so much fun!
My favorite of the session:
