The IT factor | Long Island Newborn Photographer | September Blue Photography

When I first walk into a client’s home for a newborn session, there’s just one thing I’m interested in.   The “IT” factor.  Nope, not the furniture, not the decor.   I’m looking for IT –  the light.  That beautifully soft, filtered natural light coming in at just the right angle in the just the right quantity.  Quite honestly, not every house has IT.     You’d be surprised – I’ve been in big beautiful LI homes that didn’t have much of IT and in small NYC apartments that had just the right amount of IT.     Sometimes,  it’s just a grey day and even the biggest window will let you down.    But sometimes,  all the elements come together and everything bounces and diffuses just right.  On this day, the layers upon layers of snow on the ground combined with just the right amount of cloud cover made a South facing window a joy to work with.  On this day, I didn’t curse the snow.

This is baby W, bathed in beautiful natural light, just 6 days old.

And this one – easily one of my favorite recent newborn images.  Not just because it’s a departure from the usual beanbag/blanket stuff and the way the light falls over them.  It’s the way his mommy is holding him…so natural, so relaxed… the look of pure content on this face, the tilt of Mom’s head as she looks down at her new baby… and then you notice her right thumb and that’s where you get a sense of just how tiny he is here.   It more than beautiful light and a beautiful baby – it’s a sweet moment captured.

Anna turns one | Long Island Baby Photographer | September Blue Photography

The blog is going to go quiet for a few weeks very soon as I’ve actually started packing my bags (yay!) for my trip to Punta Cana for my cousin’s wedding where I’ll be the maid of honor.   I’m so excited and I can’t wait! Yes, there will be photos, I’m sure!  So anyway, yes there are no sessions on the books for February and I’ll be keeping my fingers tightly crossed that none of my March mommies go really really early.   In the meantime, I’m going to try and get caught up on quite a few sessions.

This is Anna’s 1st birthday session.   We got so lucky because it was set to be a studio session with a chance for outdoor if the weather held out, and it did!  And we got some really BEAUTIFUL outdoor stuff…like really, really canvas worthy!  Isn’t she a gorgeous little girl?  This was my third time photographing her and I’ve loved watching her grow up over the past few months…

Loved her in my burgundy petti romper…

18 days | Long Island Newborn Photographer | September Blue Photography

It’s true… I won’t deny it.  MOST newborn sessions take place within the first 14 days of life and they are better for it.  It has pretty much become the industry standard for a newborn session and rarely will you see a newborn session that looks like this when the baby is older.  Why?  Because when newborns enter their 3rd week of life, baby acne can start to show up… they tend to sleep less and are more alert and awake.  Plus, they start to lose that newborn curl and some other classic newborn traits.   So I strongly urge all my newborn parents to let me know as SOON as baby is on the way or has been born.  Most put me on their call list of friends and family to let me know that baby has arrived.  And I can’t tell you how much I have LOVED getting those emails or texts that say “we are on our way to the hospital to have the baby!”   I feel like I’m part of it and how exciting is it to be waiting for a new baby to arrive?!  Few things in life beat that…

Hmmm … where was I?   Oh yes… newborn photography past 14 days of life usually doesn’t normally look like this.  But… then every once in awhile there is a dream baby like baby G… and she will do everything that a 6 day old will do and more.  (Actually, I’ve been super lucky lately and have gotten several fantastic “older” newborns…maybe it comes with the experience ;) ) When Baby G’s mommy contacted me last minute I just happened to have an opening – I couldn’t say no…

We were SO excited when she gave us all these amazing poses.  She was just a happy baby and it showed. Her mommy and daddy were just over the moon in love with her and that showed.  It was one of the sweetest newborn sessions ever.  And the really great thing about ”older” newborns is how nicely filled out they are…they are eating well and have started to fill out so they are plump and biteable.  [It's a word, I just made it up]   Here she is… gorgeous baby G!

Being One | Long Island Baby Photographer | September Blue Photography

Being one means you get to eat what you want, when you want, pretty much. Being one means you get to decide whether you feel like wearing shoes today… or not.  Being one means you are just starting to get your footing in this world and you have the bumps and bruises to prove it.  Being one means your personality is just starting to really shine through despite the stresses of teething, giving up a nap, and trying oh so hard to start that thing those big people call “talking”.   Being one means you are on the verge of learning the power of the tantrum.  Being one is so special… parents cherish it, family wants to see it, and everyone celebrates it.   This is Sophie, being one.

Holiday Mini Sessions | Long Island Child Photographer | September Blue Photography

Now that the holiday cards have all gone out and the custom photography gifts have been opened, I am happy to share my favorites from this year’s Holiday Mini sessions!  Thanks so much to all those who signed up and gave me a chance to (hopefully) make their holiday images a little special this year.   I welcome the challenge that mini sessions with young children bring…  it really gives me a chance to hone my skills on getting those awesome expressions and connections without the stress and tension that typical holiday portaits are known for.    It was a crazy day but such a fun day – and we got some priceless images from it… here are some of  my favorites, in no particular order…

Timmia & her Spark | Long Island Child Photographer | September Blue Photography

I met Timmia for the first time last year during the holiday mini sessions… she was a little sparkle.  Cheerful and so easy to work with.   This year her Mommy booked a full Fall session for her family and we were able to capture some really beautiful fall color and I got to see a one year older, one year wiser Timmia.  She was a little bit shy at first this time… and honestly – cold!  It was a bit a chilly that day and she was wearing her pretty holiday dress for starters.  But with a little time and patience, she warmed right up (both physically and emotionally) and I was able to capture that sparkle again.  By the end of the session, I was carrying her out of the park on my hip.  The wild & spirited ones are easy… give me a shy, reserved child that needs some warming up any day.  Getting them to open up to you and reveal that spark is probably THE most rewarding part of this job!

Beach Boy | Long Island Newborn Photographer | September Blue Photography

It was a cool October day when I walked into the warm and toasty apartment where baby T lives.  It was bathed in light from huge floor to ceiling windows and I did cartwheels in my head over the beautiful light.  The apartment warm and toasty because that’s what you need for a good newborn session (warm baby = happy baby) and T’s mom & dad followed my advice.  They were ready to go.  From the first pose to the last, this session was nothing short of awesome.  I loved Mom & Dad’s ideas and better yet – sweet baby T let us try them all!

This was one of the first few frames:

After all those awesome poses, he goes and does this… as if to say, “Oh, you didn’t get one with my eyes open yet, here ya go.”

And then went right back to sleep to make sure we could get this for his Daddy.

And of course this… because Daddy is a beach lover and surfer…  Think this boy is going to make his Daddy proud? I’m sure he already has.

Thanks so much to the L family for a great session, and to Cathy for the pullback shots (which I can’t find right now! Grrr!)

He’s not an agent, he just writes books for the CIA | Long Island Newborn Photographer | September Blue Photography

It was October…not Red October, but we were on the Hunt for a great shot.  The Sum of All my Fears was not getting one but with a sweet 4 day old, born into a VERY good looking family there was no Clear and Present Danger of not capturing gorgeous images of this little boy and his family.  Meet Jack Ryan.  Yes, I’m a dork, and yes, I love his name.

Sigh….wish I had an image like this with one or both of my boys…

Good Charlotte | Long Island Newborn Photographer | September Blue Photography

She was good - oh so good - this baby Charlotte and a such a beauty.  She was born into one of the sweetest families I’ve ever met and I loved hanging out with them almost as much as I loved photographing their new addition.

And here it is – the irresistible smirk!
