New Site & Blog are Live! (Day 4) | Long Island Newborn Photographer | September Blue Photography

So we are pretty much live with the new site, new blog and new look – what do you think?!  =) I am still working on a few more changes to the blog, studio pics still need to go up at some point and somewhere, and we are still working out some minor glitches here and there – right now everything is best viewed in 1024 x 768 resolution (or preferably higher resolution) in Mozilla FireFox 3.6.16 or later and in IE8 or later with a few minor bumps.   But please take a look around and leave me a comment!  Check out the Facebook and Twitter sliders on the left, the new work up on the site (including a featured session which I plan to update monthly), and the updated About Me section here on the blog which will tell you a bit more about my approach and my style.   I have to send out a huge thanks to Tatiana of Tiny Clicks Photography for the photos of me and pullbacks you see on the site.  She’s awesome!!  Tatiana -  you know what I just realized we didn’t do that day? Get a pic of us together!!!    So here’s one of her, in action during the workshop at my studio. =)

Day 3 – The Trendsetter | Long Island Photographer | September Blue Photography

Rounding out day three…  you might notice things look a little different around here.  I’ve overhauled my site, splash page and blog with the help of a talented and creative web designer.  It’s been a work in progress over the last couple of months and finally it’s almost done! We are still working out the minor glitches here and there but I’m soooo excited about it!   Official announcement coming soon… in the meantime…this is how excited I am about it!

Yeah, that’s me in the air on the beach in Punta Cana this past February.    I set James (my husband) up with the 70-200 lens and we got some funny looks and smiles while we were rehearsing the shot.  After a few takes we got it and went back to our beach chairs with our drinks.  And what do you know… within a few minutes there were families, children, and couples launching themselves as high as they could into the air on the beach and pressing shutters furiously.  It was a GREAT site to see.  You know why? Because they were all laughing hysterically and having a blast doing it.  Yeah that’s me, the trendsetter.  LOL

Fabulous | Long Island Newborn Photographer | September Blue Photography

Loved this little newborn peanut!  She let me try all sorts of great poses on her.  And she was such a beauty (when you see her mama’s pic, you’ll see where she got part of her good looks from!)

A broken wrist, a quiet moment | Long Island Children’s Photographer | September Blue Photography

A broken wrist.

It meant I almost didn’t get to meet and photograph these two little superstars.  E broke her wrist on the day of our scheduled shoot and would be in a cast for several weeks.  I called E’s mom in between shoots that day to see how she was doing and sure enough, as kids tend to be, she was resilient and bouncing back already.  So I got to see her and her baby sister a few weeks later for our mini session after all.  And I am so glad I didn’t miss out on these two beauties.

By now you can tell that these girls have uh… been in front of a camera once or twice before.  Their mama loves photos so they are naturals… they pose, they smile and bat their eyelashes on cue… a photographer’s dream.  And then it’s time to capture the real deal.  Oh, don’t think I don’t know it when I see it.  I have kids too and I can spot the cheese smiles a mile away.   But I snap away anyway… and I wait.  I wait until I can find and draw out (if necessary) the genuine look.   Sometimes I get real quiet during a session and I don’t say much at all.  I imagine some parents might be thinking “uh-oh, something’s wrong!  Is it not going well?”

That’s not it at all.  Silence can work wonders sometimes.  Sometimes you (well, I) just need to shut up and listen.   We were wrapping it all up and I knew I didn’t have her yet.  Not the her I knew I could capture anyway.   Mom was busy packing up little sister and we spoke very softly, almost whispering.   Then we had a quiet moment.  And then…I snapped the last frame of our session.

Look at that beautiful, luscious head of hair!  What else is there to say…   Seriously,  I was mesmorized by her hair… I’ve never seen that much hair on a little tiny baby.  So thick and luxurious.  Lucky girl.  Beautiful hair and biteable chubbiness.

Isabella | Long Island Newborn Photographer | September Blue Photography

I have to admit – I’ve been very lucky lately with some older newborns.  This little 18 day old girl was awake for awhile but she was so content and alert that she was practically posing for me.   I couldn’t get over it.  She was staring right at me.  Practically smiling… she was smiling with her eyes, I could tell ;)   Eventually she gave in and fell into a blissful sleep for some snuggly poses.

The IT factor | Long Island Newborn Photographer | September Blue Photography

When I first walk into a client’s home for a newborn session, there’s just one thing I’m interested in.   The “IT” factor.  Nope, not the furniture, not the decor.   I’m looking for IT –  the light.  That beautifully soft, filtered natural light coming in at just the right angle in the just the right quantity.  Quite honestly, not every house has IT.     You’d be surprised – I’ve been in big beautiful LI homes that didn’t have much of IT and in small NYC apartments that had just the right amount of IT.     Sometimes,  it’s just a grey day and even the biggest window will let you down.    But sometimes,  all the elements come together and everything bounces and diffuses just right.  On this day, the layers upon layers of snow on the ground combined with just the right amount of cloud cover made a South facing window a joy to work with.  On this day, I didn’t curse the snow.

This is baby W, bathed in beautiful natural light, just 6 days old.

And this one – easily one of my favorite recent newborn images.  Not just because it’s a departure from the usual beanbag/blanket stuff and the way the light falls over them.  It’s the way his mommy is holding him…so natural, so relaxed… the look of pure content on this face, the tilt of Mom’s head as she looks down at her new baby… and then you notice her right thumb and that’s where you get a sense of just how tiny he is here.   It more than beautiful light and a beautiful baby – it’s a sweet moment captured.

Anna turns one | Long Island Baby Photographer | September Blue Photography

The blog is going to go quiet for a few weeks very soon as I’ve actually started packing my bags (yay!) for my trip to Punta Cana for my cousin’s wedding where I’ll be the maid of honor.   I’m so excited and I can’t wait! Yes, there will be photos, I’m sure!  So anyway, yes there are no sessions on the books for February and I’ll be keeping my fingers tightly crossed that none of my March mommies go really really early.   In the meantime, I’m going to try and get caught up on quite a few sessions.

This is Anna’s 1st birthday session.   We got so lucky because it was set to be a studio session with a chance for outdoor if the weather held out, and it did!  And we got some really BEAUTIFUL outdoor stuff…like really, really canvas worthy!  Isn’t she a gorgeous little girl?  This was my third time photographing her and I’ve loved watching her grow up over the past few months…

Loved her in my burgundy petti romper…

18 days | Long Island Newborn Photographer | September Blue Photography

It’s true… I won’t deny it.  MOST newborn sessions take place within the first 14 days of life and they are better for it.  It has pretty much become the industry standard for a newborn session and rarely will you see a newborn session that looks like this when the baby is older.  Why?  Because when newborns enter their 3rd week of life, baby acne can start to show up… they tend to sleep less and are more alert and awake.  Plus, they start to lose that newborn curl and some other classic newborn traits.   So I strongly urge all my newborn parents to let me know as SOON as baby is on the way or has been born.  Most put me on their call list of friends and family to let me know that baby has arrived.  And I can’t tell you how much I have LOVED getting those emails or texts that say “we are on our way to the hospital to have the baby!”   I feel like I’m part of it and how exciting is it to be waiting for a new baby to arrive?!  Few things in life beat that…

Hmmm … where was I?   Oh yes… newborn photography past 14 days of life usually doesn’t normally look like this.  But… then every once in awhile there is a dream baby like baby G… and she will do everything that a 6 day old will do and more.  (Actually, I’ve been super lucky lately and have gotten several fantastic “older” newborns…maybe it comes with the experience ;) ) When Baby G’s mommy contacted me last minute I just happened to have an opening – I couldn’t say no…

We were SO excited when she gave us all these amazing poses.  She was just a happy baby and it showed. Her mommy and daddy were just over the moon in love with her and that showed.  It was one of the sweetest newborn sessions ever.  And the really great thing about ”older” newborns is how nicely filled out they are…they are eating well and have started to fill out so they are plump and biteable.  [It's a word, I just made it up]   Here she is… gorgeous baby G!

Being One | Long Island Baby Photographer | September Blue Photography

Being one means you get to eat what you want, when you want, pretty much. Being one means you get to decide whether you feel like wearing shoes today… or not.  Being one means you are just starting to get your footing in this world and you have the bumps and bruises to prove it.  Being one means your personality is just starting to really shine through despite the stresses of teething, giving up a nap, and trying oh so hard to start that thing those big people call “talking”.   Being one means you are on the verge of learning the power of the tantrum.  Being one is so special… parents cherish it, family wants to see it, and everyone celebrates it.   This is Sophie, being one.
